Landowners have an opportunity to learn about forestry and woodland stewardship via an online course. The Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources at NC State University is offering a 3-credit graduate course (Woodland Stewardship, FOR514-601) that provides an introduction and overview of non-industrial private forestry in the Southeast United States with emphasis on active forest management. The course is offered via distance education and covers topics such as history of human impact on forests, evolution of forest, forestry practices, timber and non-timber management objectives, financial aspects of forest land management, and management planning. This course is designed for those who do not have a degree in forestry. A detailed course syllabus is available online. The course is structured as follows:

  • This online course delivers all learning materials, activities, and assignments, through Moodle, a secure and easy-to-use online learning platform.
  • The course is both asynchronous, with on-your-own responsibilities and a synchronous all-day field trip that is required.
  • The course consists of 15 modules in which students will be provided assignments and assessments that should be completed prior to move on to the next module. Each module is designed to be accomplished in a week. However, a week is not a time limit but is recommended as a goal to keep students on track to successfully complete the course on time. All modules must be accomplished to pass the course.
  • The course includes 10 assignments and 14 quizzes. There is 1 practice quiz and 13 quizzes that are graded.

If you are not a currently registered student and want to take the course as a non-degree seeking student visit the following link for information on how to apply. Deadline for registering as a non-degree student is 8/16/2019. If you are already accepted in the NDS program and want to know how to enroll in the course, visit Enrollment and Tuition.

For more information on the course or if you have additional questions please contact the course instructors, Dr. Robert Bardon (rebardon@ncsu.edu, 919-515-5575) or Dr. Dennis Hazel (hazeld@ncsu.edu, 919-5155573).
