Step 2. Interview with the Horticulture Extension Agent, Savanah Laur. You will be notified of acceptance into the training program by Friday, December 1, 2023.

Step 3. Begin your studentship. Attend the 17-week training course, which will begin Monday, January 8, 2024 and will end Monday, May 6, 2024. There is a fee of $50 to be paid on the first day of class. An additional fee of $45.05 plus shipping will be required of those who wish to get a hard copy of the Extension Master Gardener Handbook. However, the online version of this book is free.

Step 4. Complete and return the final take home exam upon completion of the course.

Step 5. Work with your assigned mentor to complete case studies as part of a Helpline Training Course, which will teach you the practical skills to diagnose plant and pest problems, understand soil reports for soil health recommendations, and much more.

Step 5. Once you’ve completed both the Initial Training Course and the Helpline Training Course, you’ll be required to complete hours as part of an internship, which will be completed within a year from the completion of your studentship. This consists of 40 hours of volunteer service and 10 hours of continuing education.

Step 6. Begin serving and making a positive impact on your community! Volunteer opportunities include: writing articles for local publications, speaking to garden clubs, working on the EMGV Helpline to help home gardeners with their gardening concerns, or work in one of our demonstration gardens.

Our mission is to learn and grow our knowledge, then inspire and empower others.
