Is your room overflowing with plants? Would you rather be in a garden or cooking up fresh vegetables than anything else? Do your favorite tools include a shovel and pruners?

If any of the above is true, we invite you to apply for the Horticultural Science Summer Institute (HSSI) at NC State University from July 7-12, 2024! This in-person, weeklong, residential pre-college program is for high school youth to explore the wondrous world of horticulture.

Youth will dive into hands -on workshops like plant propagation, landscape construction and vegetable production and explore emerging technologies with controlled environments, ornamental plant breeding, and biotechnology. Field trips to local nurseries, farms and industry partners will demonstrate the application of horticulture throughout the state and globally. The days will be rounded out with evening entertainment with topics like floral design, botanical illustration and soap making.

Youth come to HSSI from all across North Carolina, the southeast and across the county to meet like-minded youth who enjoy plants, the outdoors, and have a personal or career interest in horticulture. The program is $650 and applications are open now. Scholarships may be available based on financial need.

For more information and past camp schedules, please visit the program website or contact Liz Driscoll, program coordinator, liz_driscoll@ncsu.edu | 919-886-3424.
