Chopped: Kids Edition

On July 19-22, 2022 Family & Consumer sciences Agents, Peggie Garner & Sarah Ware partnered with 4-H Agent Tara Taylor to provide Chopped: Kids Edition to Onslow Youth. During this 4 day program, the kids learned safe food handling skills, proper kitchen techniques and etiquette, and of course, cooking!!! The final day youth was tested using their skills in a friendly cooking competition.

One of the days they took a field trip to Hines Family Farms to learn about local agriculture. They partnered with Lisa Rayburn, the Horticulture Agent, to head the trip and introduce them to Donald the owner. He was phenomenal in educating the kids on how he runs his farm from logistics, to planning, to the financial side of farming. He gifted the kids fresh peaches, which were also used in their mystery baskets for the Chopped Championship!

On the final day of Chopped, Phyllis Venters: Retired Educator, Ben Warren: Assistant County Manager, and Theresa Lowe: Owner of Mike’s Farm volunteered to judge for competition day. Each team prepared an appetizer, main dish and dessert, in which they had to present to the judges. All teams competed during each round as there was no actual chopping going on. However, there was one winning team at the end.

The feedback from the parents was extremely positive. Feedback included a few parents mentioning their kids prepared meals for their family, proud of their new skills at home.

The judges were also impressed with the competition day. Utilizing all of the skills and objectives they were taught, led Mrs. Lowe to say some of the meals she was presented could be served at Mike’s Farm!!

This is the 2nd year Chopped has been offered in Onslow County and the staff hopes to keep inspiring the youth to use local foods and get in the kitchen and cook!
