North Carolina Cooperative Extension in Moore County will host a fumigation fit testing event on Friday, January 11, 2019 beginning at 9:00am. This will take place at the Moore County Ag Center located at 707 Pinehurst Ave, Carthage, NC 28327.
Respirator rules have changed. In the past, all those who apply soil fumigants for tobacco, strawberry and vegetable production must be fit tested for respirator use every year. This still applies, however under the new Worker Protection Standards, if you apply, mix, or load any chemical that requires a respirator on the label, (a common one is Gramoxone), you must be fit tested. Workers who apply, mix or load must be fit tested, and the employer must cover that cost. It is your responsibility to know which chemicals are on your farm and whether they require a respirator.
The cost for the test will be $25.00 (please bring a check made payable to the NC Agromedicine Institute). Please complete the online medical questionnaire before attending. There is a $35.00 cost for the online questionnaire. Please bring a printout to show you have completed the online portion. You can find the test at www.resptest.com or www.respexam.com. If you do not come medically-cleared, then there will be an additional cost of $10 for the medical clearance. Check with local physicians’ offices, urgent care facilities and occupational health clinics to determine whether or not they can provide medical clearance services.

Helpful Hints for Respirator Fit Testing Class and/or Fit Testing Appointment:
1. If you have a respirator from a previous fit testing please bring the respirator and the cartridges the day of the testing.
2. You must do the medical clearance prior to attending the class, if you prefer you can use your personal physician and have him/her write: “Name is medically cleared and able to wear a respirator. This clearance is good for ____ year or years.
