Join Moore County Cooperative Extension for our first Great Southeast Pollinator Census on Saturday, August 22, at the Moore County Agricultural Center.
This community event is an opportunity to learn about pollinators, explore native plants, and participate in a regional effort to better understand and support native insect populations across the Southeast.
The event will begin at 9:00 a.m. with a presentation by Christian Flores, Moore County Horticulture Agent, who will introduce the Great Southeast Pollinator Census, explain how the project works, and discuss the importance of monitoring and protecting pollinators in our ecosystems and landscapes.
Following the presentation, participants will have the opportunity to take part in the pollinator census beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the demonstration garden at the Moore County Agricultural Center. Participants will learn how to observe and identify pollinators while contributing valuable information to this citizen science project. Everyone who completes the census will receive a free packet of native plant seeds to take home!
In addition to the census activities, attendees can explore native plant resources and connect with local organizations and growers.
Several local native plant nurseries will be available selling plants, including:
- Meadowflower Farms
- Sandhills Native Plants
- Wild Things Nursery
The Sandhills Chapter of the North Carolina Native Plant Society and NC State Extension Master Gardener℠ Volunteers of Moore County will also be present to share information, answer questions, and help attendees learn more about native plants and gardening for native insects.
Gardeners, nature enthusiasts, and anyone interested in learning more about native insects and plants are invited to attend. Participants will have the opportunity to learn, ask questions, purchase locally grown native plants, and contribute to a citizen science project.
