Collapse ▲Dear Strawberry Community,
The temperature forecast for the next few days seems to be an up and down (Figure 1). Please watch temperatures close to your location.
Please also monitor temperature and also the flowers under your row covers. For the colder mornings (tomorrow; Wednesday; Thursday; Figure 1), temperatures of 34-32° are predicted, but dew-points in the mid-20s.
Frost is very likely under those conditions, especially with the current humid soil conditions and if locally temperatures drop in early morning hours at the plant level.
Yesterday I’ve talked to a few growers who experienced frost on top of their row covers. Under the described conditions, that can happen if the temperatures at ground level drop to the dew point.
If row covers are wet and/or heavy frost is observed on top of your cover, there might be a chance that your row-covers are ‘compromised’, with the potential of not protecting your plants as they should.
Monitoring temperatures and blossoms under the cover is the best thing to do. If you recognize a sharp drop of temperatures under your row-cover, using sprinklers on top of them will help.
However, this is a rare situation, but I want to make everyone aware that this can happen.
