Collapse ▲Each year the NC Farm School is held in a different region of the state. In 2025, the NC Farm School, which provides farm business training, is coming to the Sandhills. Once a month beginning on February 10 and ending on May 12, N.C. Cooperative Extension Agents from Harnett, Cumberland, Lee, Hoke, Richmond, and Moore Counties are hosting farm business classes for those interested in generating new farm income with a current or new enterprise. This training program will teach farmers, new or experienced, about how to start or diversify a farming operation with specific strategies and hands on help.
Students of the program will learn how to make a farming enterprise into a profitable endeavor in four classroom sessions that provide the support and resources students need. Brandon and Jamie Smith, who just recently started their farm, got first-hand experience with these tools, “Using what we learned in (NC) Farm School and how to manage small farm budgets, we now know pretty closely what it costs for us to raise our pigs to processing weight.”
A major aspect of the NC Farm School are the field trips and farm tours provided by other successful area farmers. These on-farm trips serve to reinforce classroom lessons. Seeing key production methods first hand is important for demonstrating how to apply classroom principles to actual farm situations. In fact, two farmers who recently graduated from the program commented, “The information gained from our farm visits allowed us to get moving and establish our planting this spring with confidence – a year sooner than would have been possible otherwise.”
N.C. Cooperative Extension agents are excited about this opportunity to work with those who are serious about agriculture. These agents play a critical role in connecting students to a network of support in their communities. The NC Farm School Sandhills team invites you to join us for this unique opportunity.
